Retention of Criminal Records

With the introduction of new legislation, namely the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001 and the Criminal Justice Act 2003, the requirement to retain criminal records changed. This retention is now governed by the ACPO “Retention Guidelines for Nominal Records on the Police National Computer”, which were drawn up by ACRO.

The Retention Guidelines have been welcomed by numerous law enforcement agencies as an important step towards the effective management of criminal records by the police service.
